The victim, a then 17-year-old boy, was with a friend in the shopping center. There was a group of 3 boys that the victim noticed were looking for a confrontation. The victim and his friend wanted to avoid this and therefore went into a supermarket. After a while, they thought the boys would be gone, but when they came outside, the boys were still there. They may have been waiting for the victim. The victim was punched and kicked several times, resulting in a cut under his eye and a black eye. He had to be treated in the hospital.
Since March, an investigation has been initiated. Efforts were made to find CCTV footage, which was first shown to police officers in the area and then to specific groups such as security guards and youth workers. One of the three boys was arrested, but unfortunately, this did not lead to identifying the other two perpetrators. Other investigative methods were then used, but the identity of the other two perpetrators remained unknown. Therefore, the publics help was requested via the investigative program Bureau Rijnmond. After the broadcast, information came in to the police that led to the arrest of the two Rotterdam residents.
