This innovative pole can be used as an additional tool to make non-selective searching and checking easier. Peter Holla: This will greatly assist us in preventive checks by showing that the selection is purely random. Of course, we are already doing this in various ways; the selection pole makes our work easier and helps to show afterward that someone was truly chosen at random.

How does the at random selection pole work?
The selection poles are intuitive and easy to use. During (traffic) checks, citizens are expected to press a button themselves, after which a sound and light signal indicates whether the person in question has been selected for a check.

Why are we going to use it?
Selective searching and checking already happens; the selection pole is an addition to that and also helps to show afterward that someone was chosen at random. This provides clarity and transparency for citizens and us as police.

For which checks can the selection pole be used?
It can be used for regular checks. Think of:
o General checks
o Traffic checks
o (Safe) checks in schools
o Preventive search actions
o Checks in safety risk areas

Can the police also check persons or vehicles without the selection pole?
The pole determines. But if we see someone approaching from a suspicious direction during a check, or observe other suspicious behavior, the police can of course check without the pole. We then follow the rules of professional checking. This means: selecting based on behavior, explaining why we are checking, doing so neatly and respectfully, and reflecting on our actions. We do not need to have the person press the selection pole.
