In the past two weeks, pro-Palestinian demonstrators peacefully protested in the courtyard of the University Library. On Monday afternoon, the building of the University at Drift 13 was also occupied by the demonstrators. Due to this occupation, the regular activities of the university could not continue, and there was a breach of local peace. Therefore, the demonstrators were ordered to leave.
However, the various orders from the University and the police were not heeded. At one point, the police had to gain access to the building and create workspace, resulting in a brief confrontation between the police and the demonstrators.
Afterwards, the police entered the building at Drift and arrested 49 demonstrators for breaching local peace. The demonstrators were transported by bus to a location elsewhere in Utrecht and subsequently released.
