On the morning of June 5, a shooting occurred near the Westland Shopping Center in the Brussels district of Anderlecht. A 49-year-old man was killed. Two suspects fled on a scooter. The Belgian police launched an investigation.
The trail of one of the suspects led to the Netherlands. On July 9, the Belgian police requested the National Investigation and Intervention Unit to locate and arrest the suspect. Within hours, detectives were on the suspects trail. The Special Intervention Service was able to arrest the man Wednesday afternoon in a hotel in Rotterdam.
The man is in custody. He was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant (EAW), and the Belgian authorities have since requested extradition. Extradition requests within the European Union always go through the International Legal Assistance Center (IRC) of the Public Prosecution Service in Amsterdam and via the Amsterdam court. The man will be presented today to the examining magistrate of the Amsterdam court, who will decide whether the man will be placed in extradition detention.
