It is 8:30 PM that Tuesday evening when the officers are driving on Piet Heinkade. They see that the driver of an electric bicycle ignores a red traffic light and that the bicycle lighting is not in order. They want to stop the driver and talk to him.

When the officers address the driver, they see that he takes off. They initiate the chase with their service vehicle. The orange flashing lights are turned on to alert other traffic. The driver of the bicycle ultimately manages to escape.

Shortly thereafter, the officers find the same driver riding his electric bicycle again. Once again, this driver is ordered to stop, and again the suspect chooses to flee. This starts off riding, but then on foot towards Rietlandpark. As the fleeing man runs towards a tram station, he jumps over the railing of a staircase. The police warn the man about this staircase, but it is too late. The suspect falls several meters and lands on the slope of the tram station. The man is seriously injured and is taken to the hospital.

The Safety, Integrity, and Complaints team of the Amsterdam police is conducting further investigation into the case.
