On an ordinary Wednesday afternoon, the 70-year-old woman receives a call from the so-called fraud department of her bank that someone has tried to withdraw money from her account. With the help of the fake bank employee, she takes several actions to secure it. Eventually, an amount of 2,500 euros disappears from her bank account.
The next day, the woman receives another message. Due to a group of criminals allegedly active in the area, the bank asks her to take photos of her valuables so that their insurance agent can pick them up. When the woman tells her son the story, he becomes suspicious and they call the police. Meanwhile, she keeps in contact with the scammer, and officers are positioned on the street and in her house to wait for the scammer. They can later arrest two individuals.
Scams, dont fall for it
Criminals come up with all sorts of tricks to get inside and take your valuables. They mislead you by pretending to be, for example, a bank or police employee. They often first call you with a story that suspicious transactions have been observed or send you a letter referring to burglaries in the area. To supposedly protect you from this, they want to come and pick up your valuables for safekeeping. You are dealing with a scam; the bank or police never comes to pick up valuables like jewelry, cash, and bank cards with PIN codes. If you dont trust it, call 112 or the bank immediately.
