Money, Jewelry, and Bank Card
The fake officer called the victim pretending to be a police officer. This happened on January 31, 2025. The fake officer stated that the victims information had been found with a criminal. Therefore, he wanted to know if there were valuables in the home so that the fake officer could safely store them at the police station. The victim told the fake officer that there was cash, jewelry, and a bank card present in the home. A few minutes later, the suspect was at the door to collect the items.
ATM Camera Footage
The police immediately launched an investigation. During the investigation, it became clear that the bank card had been used that same afternoon on Lagestraat in Rijsbergen. A man is visible on the camera footage. The footage has been shared among police colleagues. A police officer recognized the man using the card. Based on this recognition, the man was arrested in the act. The 25-year-old man from Tilburg is still in custody and is being interrogated.
Dont Fall for It!
As police, we receive multiple reports daily of so-called fake officers who are out to scam people. This also happens in our province. We emphasize that a real officer never calls or comes to your door to secure jewelry or money. Hang up immediately if you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the police asking about your valuables. Call the police yourself at 0900-8844 to verify if you have truly been contacted by a police officer. If an officer comes to your door to collect valuable items or money, call 112.
How to Recognize a Real Officer?
A real police officer can always identify themselves with a police identification card. This is a card with a name, personnel number, and photo, the size of a credit card. Plainclothes police officers are required to show this voluntarily, and they give you all the time you need to inspect the evidence. If in doubt, you can always call 0900-8844.
