How does the fraud work?
In most cases, you receive an email that appears to come from your bank. The email states that you need to request a new bank card or verify your details because there are problems with your account. The email contains a link to a fake website. This website looks very much like the real bank website but is intended to steal your login details and other personal information.
Once the fraudsters have your information, they can often transfer a lot of money from your account without you noticing immediately. Sometimes, they also ask for your credit card details so they can misuse that as well.
What happens if your bank notices suspicious payments?
If your bank notices that suspicious payments are taking place, for example, if a lot of money is suddenly transferred, the bank will always contact you to ask if this is correct. If this is not the case, the bank will immediately block your account. You can then contact your banks fraud hotline to take further action.
What if you accidentally clicked on the link?
If you accidentally clicked on a link in a suspicious email, that is not immediately dangerous. It only becomes really risky if you enter your details on the fake website that looks like the real bank website. Entering your information, such as your login details, card number, credit card information, or other personal information, is what criminals use to steal your data.
What to do if you have entered your information?
Immediately contact your banks fraud hotline to change your account details and reset your passwords. Block your bank card and report suspicious activities to your bank. It is also important to file a report with the police. When you contact the police, someone may come to help you gather evidence and take further steps.
