The police immediately started an investigation into the cause and circumstances of the car fire. Forensic investigations were conducted and surveillance footage from the area was reviewed. It soon became clear that arson was involved.
The arrested suspect is in custody. Currently, the police see no connection with previous car fires in Assen, including those recently highlighted in the program Opsporing Verzocht. Should further police investigation reveal any links between one or more fires, this will be given extra attention in the ongoing investigation. The police investigation continues.
