The man and woman arrested on August 19, both from Breda, attracted attention because they led a luxurious lifestyle, while it remained unclear how they earned their income. Following a report to FIU-Nederland and Meld Misdaad Anoniem, the financial investigation team launched an inquiry.
From expensive bags to digital millions
During a search in Breda, the police found luxury branded clothing, a Porsche Panamera, designer bags, and expensive jewelry. Additionally, cryptocurrencies valued at approximately €600,000 were seized. Officers also found a hardware wallet hidden in a shoe, which presumably contained millions in cryptocurrency. At that moment, these assets could not yet be secured.
Second blow: two million in cryptocurrency
One of the suspects was released shortly after the first arrest, but it soon became clear that the suspect wanted to launder his cryptocurrency assets. The suspect was then arrested again. This time, the police found the PIN code for the hardware wallet at the time of the arrest. Using this code, the police managed to seize the cryptocurrency on the hardware wallet, estimated to be worth €2,000,000.
Criminals hit where it hurts
Seizing criminal assets is a powerful weapon. In the Netherlands, it is estimated that €16 billion in criminal money circulates annually. By seizing this wealth, we hit criminals directly in their wallets and strip them of their status.
