The research results show that strong initiatives have already been launched. At the same time, it is clear that there are still opportunities for improvement. One of the recommendations is, for example, more ownership, connection between different initiatives, and better monitoring.  It is also clear that leaders at all levels need more support to have the right conversations and intervene where necessary.

Police Chief Yvonne Hondema: “In Central Netherlands, we have been working in various ways for several years to create a safe and inclusive working environment. We also critically examine our professionalism and what is needed to stay connected with citizens in a changing society. The honest truth is that in many places things are going well, but it is not yet self-evident everywhere; there are still colleagues who do not feel welcome, safe, or heard, and citizens who feel discriminated against by us. In that sense, I am pleased with the recommendations the researchers have given us. It provides a valuable starting point, and the recommendations are concrete opportunities to take the next step as a unit in our approach.”

What’s next

In the coming period, the recommendations will be discussed in detail with all leaders. We are investigating what is needed to realize changes.  The follow-up steps will be carefully taken in cooperation with the researchers from Erasmus University. At the same time, we will continue to focus on diverse inflow, our professionalism on the street, connecting with society, combating discrimination, and a safe and inclusive working environment.
