Why students?
For students, human trafficking in the form of sexual exploitation can be closer than expected. Especially international students or young people temporarily living and working in a new city are vulnerable. Sexual exploitation does not only occur in dark back rooms but also through seemingly normal situations such as subletting rooms, fake relationships, or financial dependency. A student may be approached by someone offering help, but then imposing demands that escalate, leading to coercion or abuse. Because victims often do not recognize themselves as victims, sexual exploitation in this group remains under the radar for a long time.
It is also important to realize that students who sublet their rooms may unwittingly contribute to human trafficking. A subtenant may use the space for exploitation without the landlord being aware of it. By not properly checking who comes into your room, students can inadvertently play a role in facilitating sexual exploitation. Being aware of subletting and being alert to signals is therefore crucial.
Together we are strong
During the Week Against Human Trafficking, the municipalities of Leiden, Delft, The Hague, and Nieuwkoop, together with HEIT, SHOP, RSIV, RIEC The Hague, the police unit of The Hague, universities, and student associations join forces in the fight against sexual exploitation and human trafficking. By increasing awareness together, we help students and their environment to recognize signals faster and better protect victims. Together we stand for a society where exploitation has no place.
Report suspicious situations
Human trafficking is a hidden crime that only becomes visible when people dare to share their suspicions. A report can make the difference between exploitation and help. Even in doubt, it is important to take action: professionals can assess whether human trafficking is taking place. By reporting, you not only help the victim but also prevent others from ending up in the same situation. Report it to the police via 0900-8844 or anonymously via Meld Misdaad Anoniem at 0800-7000. Your report can make a difference.
