The Digital Crime Team of the Central Netherlands police started a large investigation into dating fraud in June 2025 based on dozens of reports. At least 26 victims reported to the police between June 2022 and September 2025. The total damage from these reports amounts to over €550,000. In the police investigation, the suspects, two women aged 26 and 41 from Utrecht, were identified.

Dating Fraud

Victims were defrauded through a dating platform. First, a bond was established, and then the suspects attempted to extract money or goods from the victims using a false name and/or false information. The contact moments were both physical and digital. During physical meetings, victims were persuaded to make multiple payments, for example, for purchasing goods at various stores. Often, multiple individuals were present during these physical meetings.

After the arrests on Wednesday, October 15, three locations in the Utrecht region were searched. Several police dogs were deployed for this purpose. During the searches, the police seized cash, jewelry, and a car. Further arrests are not ruled out.
