Preventive Searching
Part of the city center and the area around the Johan Cruijff Arena were designated as a safety risk zone on Wednesday from 12:00 to 24:00 in the lead-up to the AFC Ajax – Galatasaray match. In these designated areas, anyone can be searched preventively.
A group of Galatasaray supporters was checked around 16:30 at Ruijterkade. During this check, 6 supporters were arrested for possession of fireworks and balaclavas.
Confrontation
After the check, the remaining group of supporters was escorted by the police to the Dam. During this walk to the Dam, a brief confrontation occurred between Galatasaray supporters and Ajax fans. The groups had to be separated by the Mobile Unit.
Stabbing Incident
Around 17:30, a report came in of a man who was stabbed in the face with a piece of glass. The police are investigating the circumstances and whether this incident is related to the AFC Ajax – Galatasaray football match.
Assault
After Galatasarays victory, confrontations between supporters occurred again. A steward at the Arena was assaulted inside the stadium. The police intervened using pepper spray and batons.
Fighting also broke out near the Pathé cinema corner, where a person was knocked unconscious. At Bijlmer Arena station, a fight broke out and stones and cans were thrown at officers.
Around midnight, most football supporters returned home, and the area around the Arena was almost empty by 00:30.
