On Thursday evening, January 1, around 11:45 PM, the police received a report of a shooting incident in Piet Wiedijkpark. Officers found two victims at the scene with gunshot wounds. Immediate first aid was provided, but unfortunately, both teenagers died on site. A third boy, who was in the company of Mohammad and Mohammed, narrowly escaped the gunfire. The suspect fled immediately after the incident.
The Major Crime Team immediately launched a large-scale investigation. On Tuesday, January 20, the 25-year-old Amsterdam resident was arrested. The arrest was reviewed by the examining magistrate on Friday, January 23. On Tuesday, January 27, he was brought before the examining magistrate and remanded in custody. The suspect is under full restrictions and may only contact his lawyer.

A breakthrough has been made in the investigation into the death of two Syrian teenagers on New Years Day in Piet Wiedijkpark, Amsterdam Nieuw-West. On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, a 25-year-old man from Amsterdam was arrested. He is suspected of killing 16-year-old Mohammad and 18-year-old Mohammed. Both victims were staying at a reception center of the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) in Amsterdam.
