Surveillance
Officers were patrolling on Bolwerk-Zuid on Sunday afternoon. They observed a suspicious situation and signaled the driver to stop. The car stopped and the officers got out to check the driver.
Out of nowhere, the driver accelerated. An officer was standing in front of the car. She tried to jump aside. She partially succeeded, as she was hit in the legs.
Pursuit
Fortunately, the officer managed to get up and, along with her colleague, ran back to the police car. They immediately began the pursuit.
Since an officer was hit, multiple police cars joined the search for the suspect. Shortly thereafter, officers spotted the car in the vicinity of Bastionweg in Bergen op Zoom. They arrested the driver, a 30-year-old man from Bergen op Zoom. He is still in custody, and the police are interrogating him.
Second Car
Shortly after, a second car was seized by the police. This vehicle was parked on Bolwerk-Zuid. Witnesses informed the police that this vehicle was also involved in the suspicious situation.
Violence Against Police and Emergency Workers
The police find aggression and violence against their staff unacceptable. Police officers have a responsible role in society and must be able to perform their duties without being hindered. With mutual respect. Aggression or violence, in any form, against staff will not be tolerated.
