Cemil Önal was shot dead on Thursday, May 1, around 5:45 PM on the terrace of a hotel on Van Vredenburchweg in Rijswijk, right in the Overvoorde park. The terrace was full of visitors at that time. The victim was shot at close range and died on the spot. The shooter fled the scene.
A description and a photo of the shooter had already been released earlier. Witnesses described him as a man about 1.80 meters tall with a normal to sturdy build, a beard, and wearing black clothing. The pants were likely from the brand Adidas, and he was also wearing black shoes with a white sole.
Second Suspect
It has now been established from the investigation that the shooter was with a second man in the hours leading up to the shooting incident in and around the park. Just before the shooting, they were seen together for a few minutes at the entrance of the park on Guntersteinweg.
This second man also had a beard, wore a black hoodie, and white shoes with a dark patch on the heel. Later, he wore a black shirt with a white print from the brand: Champion.
Route of Escape
The police suspect that this second man was also involved in the death of the victim. He did not go into the park with the shooter but walked after their encounter towards Middachtenweg, past the gas station, heading towards Erasmusweg. He was last seen on Erasmusweg, now without a hoodie, walking towards Loevesteinlaan.
The shooter walked in the same direction after the shooting but crossed Middachtenweg at the gas station and was last seen there. He had also taken off his hoodie by then.
Witnesses
The police are still looking for two witnesses who were sitting on a bench by the water in Park Overvoorde around the time of the shooting incident. They may have essential information that could be important for the investigation. The police would like to get in touch with them.
Others who saw anything unusual on Thursday, May 1, between 3:30 PM and 6:30 PM in the vicinity of Van Vredenburchweg, Guntersteinweg, and Erasmusweg are also asked to come forward.
