The Digital Infrastructure Inspectorate (RDI) will start distributing local DAB+ licenses on January 15, 2026. In total, there are 784 available licenses spread across various allotments in the Netherlands.
The distribution is of interest to existing local commercial broadcasters looking to expand their reach, as well as new entrants wanting to broadcast via DAB+ for the first time. This scheme offers opportunities for local media companies with commercial plans, niche stations, and media investors, as well as startups launching new radio concepts without the higher costs of FM frequencies. DAB+ remains an important and future-oriented platform for further digitization and diversity of the Dutch radio landscape.
The reach of digital radio is growing, partly because new cars are equipped as standard with a DAB+ receiver. The wide availability of licenses in various allotments provides more room for innovation and a greater offering for listeners.
The distribution is based on the principle first come, first served. This means applications are processed in the order they are fully and correctly received by the RDI. There is no auction procedure, allowing broadcasters to quickly gain clarity about their application. If there are more applications than available licenses for a specific allotment, the licenses are distributed by lottery.
Interested broadcasters can submit an application from January 15, 2026. More information about the conditions, available frequency space, and application procedure can be found on the RDI website.
