From August 13 to 18, 2025, we are working on the construction of a new connecting arch at the Hooipolder interchange. In about 100 hours, we will slide a concrete underpass weighing 6,300 tons and 100 meters long into the A27. Hence the name: the 100 hours of Hooipolder.
Follow the work via live blog and live stream
The sliding of the underpass and all necessary work can be followed live via a live blog and live stream. We also regularly post updates on our social channels about the broader project Improvement A27 Houten - Hooipolder. See the live blog and the live stream .
Sliding the underpass in 100 hours
In September 2024, the construction consortium ALSÉÉN began building the new underpass, next to the A27. Now is the moment to slide this structure into place. We start by preparing for the sliding moment. We mill the asphalt from the road, remove guardrails, light poles, and cables, and excavate large amounts of sand. This creates a large hole where we can slide the underpass in. We build a special sliding structure that will set the underpass in motion. In about 10 hours, we will slide the underpass into place at a speed of 10 meters per hour.
Finally, we will restore the A27: we dismantle the sliding structure, fill the hole with sand, lay new asphalt, reinstall the light poles and cables, apply the road markings, and also leave the shoulder neat. This way, we ensure that the Hooipolder interchange can safely open to traffic again after the weekend.
Improvement A27 Houten - Hooipolder
The expansion of the Hooipolder interchange is part of the Improvement A27 Houten – Hooipolder project. There are long traffic jams daily on the A27 between the Hooipolder and Houten interchanges. Therefore, Rijkswaterstaat will widen and renew the A27 over a length of 47 km in the coming years. Four large bridges will also be tackled, rush lanes will be constructed, and about 60 viaducts and culverts for watercourses will be adjusted. This will improve traffic flow in the future and enhance livability by reducing traffic jams and bypass traffic in the region.
Work at the Hooipolder interchange
But we are not done yet: after these 100 hours, work in and around the interchange will continue. We will work on the underpass of the Oosterhoutseweg, which we plan to slide into the road in a similar manner by the end of this year. We are also building two new viaducts: one over the A59 and one over the Kerklaan in Raamsdonksveer, and we are widening the existing viaduct over the Kerklaan (Julianalaan viaduct). In addition, various adjustments will still take place at the interchange itself. We expect to open the adjusted interchange by the end of 2026.
