On the night of Wednesday, October 22 to Thursday, October 23, 2025, a sinkhole was discovered during work in the central reservation on the embankment of the A12 between Velperbroek interchange and the IJssel bridges near Arnhem. The hole is approximately one meter by one meter in size. Its depth is unknown.

Main carriageway A12 closed

For this reason, we have completely closed the main carriageway on the A12 towards Germany. All traffic towards Germany is being diverted via Velperbroek interchange to the parallel carriageway over the IJssel. There is one lane available towards Utrecht. Traffic from De Liemers or Germany can still turn towards Velperbroek interchange.

What is a sinkhole?

A sinkhole is a hole underground caused by the washing away of the subsoil. The cause of the sinkhole in the central reservation of the A12 is still unknown. On October 23, 2025, during daylight, we will further investigate the cause of the sinkhole and look at how the problem can be solved.

It is not yet known how long the traffic disruption will last.
