Since Sunday afternoon, August 31, 2025, at 4:00 PM, the A12 between junction Maanderbroek and junction Lunetten towards Utrecht is fully open for traffic. The major maintenance went smoothly, allowing the road to open earlier than planned.

Originally, traffic was expected to be able to resume on Monday morning, September 1, at 5:00 AM. The highway was closed for 9 days for major maintenance.

In May 2025, the same section of the A12 was also closed for 9 days for work. By working day and night in 2 nine-day periods, a lot of work was accomplished, and the A12 towards Utrecht can now last for many years.

Assia Messouli, environmental manager at Rijkswaterstaat: We are incredibly happy that the work was completed faster than planned. We are working on the largest maintenance task ever. This is necessary to keep the Netherlands safe and accessible. These closures are significant, but due to the understanding and flexibility of road users, the extra travel time has been limited to a maximum of 45 minutes.

Many chose to work from home, travel outside peak hours, or use alternative transport such as the train or bike. As a result, the region remained accessible, and traffic continued to flow.

Special works

During 2 closure periods of 9 days and nights, a total of 30 km of asphalt was renewed by BAM Infra Nederland. Quieter asphalt was applied, which reduces noise pollution for the surroundings.

The asphalt removed during the first closure in May was largely reused in the work in August. In addition to renewing the road surface, maintenance was also carried out on guardrails, lighting, and matrix boards.

The verges were mowed, and we cleaned signs, viaducts, and noise barriers. This section of the A12 is now safer, more sustainable, and ready for the future!

Next: major maintenance A12 towards Veenendaal

After completing the major maintenance towards Utrecht, the A12 towards Veenendaal, between junction Lunetten and Veenendaal, will also be addressed.

When and in what form this work will take place is still unknown.

Works at multiple locations

Rijkswaterstaat has many maintenance projects across the country. In the coming months, work will also be done on the A27 between Houten and Hooipolder, the roads in and around Rotterdam, and 2nd Coentunnel (A10). Rijkswaterstaat carefully coordinates the planning to ensure that traffic continues to flow as smoothly as possible.

Following the work on the A12, maintenance will take place on the N224. From September 1 to 25, this road will be closed from Ede to Renswoude, including the connection with the A12.
