The Ministry of Public Works warns road users of additional traffic disruptions at the Terbregseplein interchange starting Friday afternoon, September 5, 2025. Two of the four lanes from the A16 (from Rotterdam) will be closed.

In both directions towards Gouda and Hoek van Holland, only one lane will be available for traffic at the interchange. This will cause additional traffic disruptions. We advise traffic to take the Ring Zuid route: A15 - A4 (Beneluxtunnel) - A20.

The closure of the lanes is necessary because inspections revealed that the roof of a water cellar beneath the connecting roads is no longer safe. Such inspections are regularly conducted to check the condition of our structures and ensure their safety. In the short term, a temporary structure will be placed in the water cellar to support the roof. This way, we ensure that both the road and the cellar remain safe to use. A plan for permanent restoration will follow.

Traffic Disruptions A16/A20

It is expected that the two closed lanes will cause additional traffic disruptions starting Friday afternoon, September 5. Disruptions on the roads around Rotterdam were already anticipated this weekend due to expected crowds from the World Port Days and planned work on the parallel lane of the A16 between the Ridderkerk and Terbregseplein interchanges (from Friday evening 22:00 to Monday morning September 8, 05:00).

How long the lanes will remain closed is still unknown. The Ministry of Public Works advises road users to prepare well for their journey and to follow current traffic information. Adjust your travel time or route where possible and follow the detour via the A15 and A4 to the A20.

Water Cellar

The function of a water cellar is to keep the roads above free of water. Rainwater is collected in the cellar and then drained to a nearby ditch.
