Many tunnels in the Netherlands are due for a major renewal task. How can Public Works and Water Management work together with construction and installation companies, engineering firms, and suppliers to organize maintenance more intelligently?
Platform V&R has issued advice on possibilities for improvements to tunnels, as almost all tunnels in the Netherlands date from after World War II. Due to population growth and increased traffic, many of these tunnels are now due for a major renewal task. To meet this challenge, it is important to organize overall maintenance more intelligently, thus enabling a faster renewal process for the tunnels.
4 concrete goals
To achieve improvements, the expert team tunnels of the Platform V&R has worked on 4 concrete goals:
- Establish a (procurement) collaboration strategy that minimizes waste in the chain and effectively utilizes the existing knowledge and skills of the various chain partners throughout the replacement and renovation process.
- Create an optimal schedule that allows for a process acceleration of about 2 years from the current master planning from planning phase to tender.
- Ensure optimal bundling of tunnels.
- Determine whether an optimal link between fixed maintenance, variable maintenance, and renewal is possible or not.
Collaboration meetings
To find answers to these questions, the expert team tunnels organized a series of collaboration meetings. Together with representatives from the market, industry organizations, Public Works and Water Management, and other parties, a clear picture has been created of the task and the ingredients that contribute to an efficient approach to tunnel renovation.
