During the weekend of May 9 - 12, 2025, the wooden Krúsrak bridge over the N7 will be temporarily removed for renovation. The bridge from 2008 shows damage to the wood, among other things due to moisture accumulation.
To allow the wood to dry and recover properly, the bridge will be renovated at a temporary work site. To keep the connection between the Duinterpen neighborhood and the center of Sneek via the Akkerwinde accessible, the contractor will place a temporary bridge that weekend.
Minimize Disruption to the Surroundings
‘Renovating on-site would cause prolonged disruption,’ says Roy Grieving, project leader at Civiele Technieken de Boer bv (CT deBoer). ‘Think of the closure of the Akkerwinde and the N7 and large tent structures above the highway. By relocating the bridge to a work site, the inconvenience for traffic and the environment remains limited.’
Temporary Bridge for All Traffic
A temporary steel bridge, suitable for cars, cyclists, and pedestrians, will be placed where Krúsrak currently is. ‘We are using a design that we have previously successfully implemented on the A16,’ explains Grieving.
‘The bridge is suitable for virtually all traffic; the usage possibilities are therefore the same as those of Krúsrak.’
Bridge Exchange in One Weekend
The contractor will build the temporary bridge in advance on a site next to the N7. During the weekend of May 9 to 12, the so-called ‘bridge exchange’ will take place. On Friday evening, the road will be closed. After that, steel driving plates will be laid and temporary foundations prepared.
Krúsrak will be disconnected, lifted with jacks, and driven over a specially constructed steel bridge over the water to the work site.
Almost immediately afterward, the temporary bridge will be driven over the same route to the open space and placed. ‘As if we are exchanging 2 bridges in 1 weekend,’ says Grieving. ‘It requires a tight plan and good collaboration.’
Collaboration with Wagenborg
For transport, CT deBoer collaborates with Wagenborg Nedlift, which also placed the original bridge in 2008. ‘They know the situation. That helps enormously,’ says Grieving.
If the renovation proceeds as planned, the original Krúsrak bridge will be reinstalled at the end of this year, ready for a new phase of life.
