Unfortunately, the previously announced openings of the Buitenhuizer Bridge this navigation season cannot take place. We must conclude that the bridge does not function reliably enough to safely facilitate operating moments. During the openings on April 18 and 22, 2025, there were again technical problems, which especially caused significant delays for the opening on April 22.
An analysis of the bridge operations on April 18 and 22 shows that there is a high chance of malfunctions. These pose unacceptable risks for safety on the water and on the road. Furthermore, the malfunctions can lead to long waiting times for road traffic (including emergency services) on the N202.
Expectation: openings from mid-July 2025
To get the bridge operational again, parts need to be replaced and technical adjustments made. This involves adjustments in the software and hardware, which are expected to be completed by mid-July.
Consequences for shipping
The situation remains largely unchanged.
- The vertical clearance remains limited to a maximum of 6.82 m (Canal level).
- Vessels lower than 6.82 m can pass without hindrance.
- The (eastern) Standing Mast Route to the North Sea Canal via Amsterdam is also not available until further notice.
Consequences for road traffic (N202)
There are no consequences for road traffic.
Be prepared to go on the water
Safe navigation requires good preparation. The website Navigation Information shows at what times locks and bridges are operated and whether there are planned or unplanned disruptions.
