The final phase of the Julianakanaal widening project has begun. This means that the work sites will gradually be restored to their original state.
The rented and borrowed plots are no longer used as storage or construction sites and have been restored as agricultural land.
Plots no longer all needed
Van den Herik has tidied the lands and sown them with a green manure crop. Most of the plots can be returned to the tenants by 31 December 2025 at the latest. Some plots are still needed for our work on the canal. Especially the plot where the construction cabin is located, which we will rent a little longer.
A small part of the storage depot on Obbichterweg will also remain in use for a while. There is still a pile of reclaimed asphalt there, which Rijkswaterstaat can reuse later for the widening of the A2. This way, reclaimed materials are neatly reused in the area. All the reclaimed soil from the canal has now been removed.
Roads and trees
Since 2016, the Eastern Canal Road has been in use as part of the work site for the widening of the Julianakanaal. It has served for years as a convenient route for transporting materials. Soon, local traffic will be allowed again and farmers can use this fully newly asphalted route again.
At the end of November, Van den Herik will plant a new row of trees along the canal. About 80 summer lindens will get a place between the canal boulevard and the Obbicht bridge.
We are also still working on the inspection path between Berg bridge and Obbicht bridge. We will apply a new layer of asphalt at the beginning of December. On behalf of the municipality of Stein, Van den Herik will also work on the inspection paths near Urmond.
Knowing what lies on the bottom in 30 years
Although all outdoor work will soon be finished, Van den Herik is still busy with the delivery dossier that belongs to the handover to Rijkswaterstaat. This includes what has been made outside with the accompanying certificates, the technical drawings of the work, and the quality controls. This way, we will still know in 30 years what lies on the bottom of the canal here.
