What started as a promising weekend with tight planning and teamwork ended with a setback for Rijkswaterstaat. During the first weekend closure of the A2 between Het Vonderen and Kerensheide, asphalt problems occurred in two locations.
This caused delays in the work and traffic flow experienced disruption on Monday morning, November 17, 2025. We keep you informed via the website Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Information.
Work went well but took longer
Boskalis largely carried out the planned work according to schedule. Thanks to tight planning and close cooperation between Rijkswaterstaat, Boskalis, road managers, emergency services, acute care, and public transport, all work was mostly completed on schedule and traffic congestion remained limited.
However, the A2 opened an hour later than promised: at 6:00 AM instead of 5:00 AM. Now that the road is accessible again, some lanes remain closed and a speed limit applies, causing further delays. This first closure remains an important milestone for the future widening of the A2 and thus for better traffic flow in the region.
60% less traffic: big relief
Despite the asphalt problems, there was also good news. Thanks to an extensive traffic and mobility plan, international detours, and a strong communication campaign, traffic disruption this weekend was exceptionally limited.
The call to only use the road when necessary was widely followed: both in Limburg and on alternative routes via Belgium and Germany. On provincial and local roads around the closure, traffic was over 60% lower than usual.
This prevented traffic jams and allowed emergency services to pass without problems. We thank residents and road users for their cooperation, which was indispensable for the success of this weekend.
Outlook: more disruption ahead
The calm is temporary: in two weeks there will be a new closure for work on the Slagmolen viaduct and the Molenbeek culvert. Then the A2 towards Maastricht will be closed between St. Joost and Echt, from Friday, November 28 at 9:00 PM until Sunday, November 30 at 1:00 PM.
And it doesnt stop there. In the coming years, six more weekend closures will follow. The next major A2 WeekendBreak is scheduled from October 9 to 12, 2026, again between Het Vonderen and Kerensheide.
