Skippers taking a berth in the overnight harbor of Spijk are required to use shore power. The use of generators for energy supply is no longer permitted. In recent months, skippers have been extensively informed about this. Public Works and Water Management is now moving to enforcement.
Sanction
The use of generators causes noise and odor nuisance for residents and is contrary to Article 7.06, Paragraphs 3 and 4 of the Rhine Navigation Police Regulation. We have started enforcement, and in case of violation, a sanction will be imposed that can amount to €290.
Instruction
In recent months, skippers have been extensively informed about the obligation. Each skipper who took a berth from the Nijmegen traffic post was instructed to use shore power. Furthermore, signs with house rules have been placed on the docks, and during inspections, a flyer with those rules was given to the skipper. It was also mentioned that in case of future violations of the regulations, a sanction would be imposed.
Royal Inland Shipping Netherlands
Royal Inland Shipping Netherlands (KBN), the trade organization of inland skippers, is also advocating for the use of shore power. Leny van Toorenburg said: ‘I understand that after a long day of sailing and mooring, people sometimes don’t feel like dealing with cables, but we must plug in. Inland shipping is an environmentally friendly industry, and we want to continue that, and shore power is part of it. For ourselves, the environment, and to maintain our lead as an environmentally friendly modality.’
Overnight Harbor Spijk
We have established an overnight harbor for inland skippers in Beijenwaard near Spijk. In addition to fifty regular berths, there are two berths for push boats with barges and special berths for ships with hazardous cargo.
