Preparations for the renovation of the Spooldersluis and the Spooldersluis Bridge are in full swing. Most of the work will take place during a continuous closure from April 21 to July 27, 2025.
In two separate meetings on March 3, Rijkswaterstaat and contractor combination Le Chêne informed lock users and residents about the upcoming work.
Preparation Work for Spooldersluis
In two sessions – in the afternoon for users and in the evening for residents – employees of Rijkswaterstaat and Le Chêne discussed the progress of preparations. Ecological measures ensure that animals are not disturbed by the renovation. Aviary mesh prevents birds from nesting on the lock complex. Nesting bowls and pole boxes provide birds and bats with alternative breeding and mating places nearby.
Le Chêne has determined through inspections which parts need replacing. Extensive testing of all components to be installed in the lock and bridge, including drive and operation, is currently underway at the industrial site next to the lock complex.
Temporary Bridge for Cyclists and Pedestrians Limits Disruption
The renovation inevitably causes inconvenience for users and residents. During the 14 weeks from Monday, April 21 to Sunday, July 27, both the Spooldersluis and the Spooldersluis Bridge will be completely closed to all traffic. Residents are pleased that a temporary bridge for cyclists and pedestrians will be provided on the other side of the N331. This minimizes the detour route, especially for schoolchildren.
Users are prepared for ships to detour via Keteldiep, Ketelmeer, Ramsdiep, Zwarte Meer and Zwarte Water during the closure.
Participants Show Involvement
Participants at both meetings clearly showed their involvement with interested questions. For example, about the location of the temporary operating building, the replacement of the fencing around the lock area, the working hours during the renovation, and the function of the curves in the temporary bicycle bridge.
Continuing Dialogue with Stakeholders
Rijkswaterstaat and Le Chêne are pleased to maintain dialogue with stakeholders in this way. To encourage engagement during the renovation, there will be a freely accessible viewpoint where the work can be clearly seen. During an open day in May, local residents will have the opportunity to view the work and receive explanations from Rijkswaterstaat and Le Chêne.
