The A27 between Houten and Hooipolder will be widened and renewed over a length of 47 km. The project is facing much higher costs than expected.
Causes of this include price increases, current market tensions, an initially too low estimate, and evolving insights (including the great complexity and worse condition of the area). In the spring memorandum, additional budget has been made available, allowing the project to continue with urgency.
The project will therefore be implemented in phases, starting with the most urgent project components. Less urgent project components will be realized later.
Ongoing Work
The work for the expansion of junction Hooipolder and the connection to the Groote Haar business area near Gorinchem is in full swing. We will continue unabated. For example, in the summer of 2025, the underpass at junction Hooipolder under the A27 will be slid in.
Short-term Work
Work that is technically unavoidable is given the highest priority: the replacement of the Merwedebrug and the Hagesteinsebrug, both of which are nearing the end of their lifespan.
Prioritization of other project components will be based on their contribution to traffic flow and the resolution of bottlenecks. This means that the road widening between Everdingen and Gorinchem is planned for the short term, and the construction of the 2nd Merwedebrug will start after the current Merwedebrug is replaced. The realization of the Merwedebruggen and the Hagesteinsebruggen will take several years longer than expected.
Long-term Work
The Houtensebrug and the Keizersveerbruggen are still in excellent condition. Therefore, these project components will be addressed later. Everything remains focused on achieving the end goal; executing the entire route decision and improving accessibility on this important North-South connection.
Improvement A27 Houten - Hooipolder
On the A27 between junction Hooipolder and Houten, long traffic jams occur daily. Therefore, we will widen and renew the A27 in the coming years over a length of 47 km. Four large bridges will also be addressed, peak lanes will be constructed, and approximately 60 viaducts and culverts for watercourses will be adjusted. This will improve traffic flow in the future and enhance livability by reducing traffic jams and bypass traffic in the region.
