The KNMI issued an orange code on Saturday, January 3, 2026, for the provinces of North and South Holland, Utrecht, North Brabant, and Gelderland. Due to heavy snowfall in these provinces, Rijkswaterstaat warns of dangerous driving conditions.
Be aware of slippery conditions caused by freezing of wet road sections. In the rest of the country, a yellow code applies. Winter showers are expected to continue this weekend. Efforts are underway to combat the slipperiness.
Closures and traffic disruptions
In the central part of the country, several on- and off-ramps and connecting roads are closed due to skidding and jackknifed trucks. Drivers are strongly advised to adjust their driving style to the conditions and to expect traffic disruptions.
Because there is less traffic on the road due to the Christmas holidays and the weekend, the grit is less well mixed into the road surface. Also, less traffic drives on the left lane, causing snow to remain and freeze.
Deployment of anti-slip measures
Efforts are being made to combat slipperiness with all available resources. All gritters and snow plows are deployed and will continue until all highways are clear. Since Friday evening, January 2, 2026, 7:00 PM, over 9 million kilos of salt have been spread. To combat slipperiness, 577 gritters (which can also be equipped with snow plows if necessary), 630 snow plows, and 1500 people are deployed.
On the website Rijkswaterstaatstrooit , you can see where the gritters are operating and where salt has been spread in the last six hours. The site also shows how much salt has been spread.
