In December 2021, the foil structure of the Leppa aqueduct in the A32 near Akkrum was damaged during drilling for fiber optic cables. This caused four leaks. The two higher leaks were repaired in 2023 by excavation and sealing the foil. The deeper leaks require a different approach.

To find a suitable solution, Rijkswaterstaat conducted practical tests in the summer of 2025 at the sand extraction site Panhuyspoel near Earnewâld. Three repair methods are being tested. These three tests have now been completed. In the coming weeks, it will be determined which method is most suitable for repairing the foil structure of the Leppa Aqueduct.

When will the work take place?

The repair work is expected to take place at the end of 2025 or early 2026. Road traffic on the A32 can continue to drive, but the parallel road and the bike path will be temporarily closed during this period.

Detours will be set up for cyclists and local traffic. With this repair, we ensure that the Leppa Aqueduct continues to function safely, robustly, and sustainably in the future. The knowledge gained will also be utilized in other projects elsewhere in the Netherlands.
