Rijkswaterstaat is working on restoring the Overlaatbrug at Bosscherveld in Maastricht. It was severely damaged during high water on the Meuse in 2024. We expect the bridge to be fully available again by mid-2026.
Due to a combination of factors, part of the overflow dam broke through on 3 January 2024. A houseboat came loose, drifted away, and collided with the Overlaatbrug. The bridge sustained significant damage. Therefore, we built a new overflow dam and a temporary bridge. Now we are working on the permanent restoration of the bridge.
Work on the Overlaatbrug
In recent times, various parts of the Overlaatbrug have been repaired or replaced. For example, a damaged bridge pillar was renewed and stone riprap was applied around the pillars. Two bridge spans were also replaced and the edge beams poured.
Contractor Idverde is currently working on the design of the asphalt layer and the new railing. After these final works, the bridge can be safely and sustainably put back into use.
Planning and follow-up restoration of Stuwweg
If the work proceeds according to plan, the Overlaatbrug will be fully restored by mid-2026. Soon, we will also start restoring the Stuwweg. Uniform mooring facilities for houseboats in the area will also be installed. These works are expected to start after the summer holidays of 2026.
Maintenance of waterways in Southern Netherlands
We always work on accessible waterways, water quality, safety, and ecological values around the water. We do this together with others for management and maintenance of waterways in Southern Netherlands and for construction, maintenance, and design of waterworks, banks, and floodplains.
We continuously seek commonalities in many requirements, wishes, and interests. However, inconvenience and disruptions cannot always be avoided. We minimize these as much as possible and communicate about them in time.
