In the winter of 2024, work continued on the Princess Margriet Tunnel despite the weather. Phase 3 of the restoration project has been successfully completed.
What work has been done in recent months? And what can residents and road users expect in the coming months?
Foundation Phase Completed
Anyone who regularly passes by or over the tunnel may have noticed: the large foundation machines are gone. This is an important sign. The old anchor piles and wall anchors have all been replaced and renewed. As a result, the tunnel is now firmly anchored in the ground and the tunnel base will no longer rise.
With this foundation phase completed, we can now focus on the finishing touches: restoring the concrete floor, laying a new asphalt layer, and installing road furniture such as guardrails.
Closure July 2025
To carry out the final phase of the work properly, we will first lay new asphalt in the northern tunnel tube. Therefore, the Princess Margriet Tunnel will be completely closed from Friday evening, July 11, 7:00 PM to Monday morning, July 14, 5:00 AM. From Monday, July 14, the northern tunnel tube will be open to all road users, and the southern tunnel tube will be closed for new asphalt to be laid there as well.
Long Weekend Closure
As a final step, we will close the tunnel completely one more time, from Thursday evening, August 28, 7:00 PM to Monday morning, September 1, 5:00 AM. During that weekend, we will lay the final asphalt layer and place the markings and signage. If work cannot be carried out due to bad weather, a reserve weekend is planned from Thursday evening, September 4, 7:00 PM to Monday morning, September 8, 5:00 AM to carry out the work. In the week following the weekend closure, traffic measures such as barriers and signage will be cleared. This may cause some limited inconvenience.
If everything goes according to plan, the tunnel will be fully open to all road users from early September 2025. This is earlier than the end of 2025, which was previously announced.
Final Works
Although traffic can then use the tunnel again, the project is not yet completely finished. Until the end of this year, we will still be working on the restoration of the verges and clearing the construction site.
