The repair of the Heel lock is progressing smoothly. On March 7, 2025, the lock gates were removed, allowing various repairs to be carried out at the location. Due to the swift progress, we expect the lock chamber to be available again by early April 2025.
The work is being carried out by the contractor combination Mourik-Swarco (CMD).
Inspection and Work at Heel Lock
A dive team inspected various components at the lock and removed other debris. To perform the repairs at the upper pivot point, measures are being taken to allow good access. Damaged concrete from the underlying structure is being removed, and damaged steel parts like the break pins are being repaired.
Once the work at the site is completed, the repaired lock gates will be reinstalled with a floating crane, reconnected, and tested. The lock is expected to be operational again by early April instead of April 11. Once more clarity about the date is available, it will be announced through known channels.
Log
On January 21, 2025, the upper pivot point of the door of the large lock chamber in Heel was severely damaged when a log got caught between the door and the door casing. Since then, the lock chamber has been closed to shipping.
