Road users are warned to expect slippery conditions due to freezing rain and wet snow on the night of Sunday, January 11 to Monday, January 12, 2026. The KNMI has issued an orange code for the entire country, except for the province of Zeeland.

Slippery conditions due to freezing rain are often hard to see. Drivers should therefore be prepared for very dangerous driving conditions caused by treacherous ice. The urgent advice is not to go on the road in provinces where the orange code is in effect unless it is necessary.

KNMI Forecast

On Sunday, January 11 during the day, a yellow code applies to almost the entire country for local slippery conditions caused by snow residues or freezing of wet roads. Late Sunday evening and during the night from Sunday to Monday, January 12, winter precipitation will follow from the west. Throughout the country, except the southwest, there is a chance of treacherous ice due to freezing rain.

During the Monday morning rush hour, freezing rain is likely only in the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, and Overijssel. During the course of Monday morning, it will become less cold and the slipperiness will disappear everywhere.

Monday morning rush hour January 12, 2026

During the morning rush hour, road users in the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, and Overijssel must still take into account dangerous driving conditions due to freezing rain. Because road surface temperatures in the rest of the country may still be below zero locally during the Monday morning rush hour, we also advise drivers there to be aware of treacherous ice.

Slippery road treatment

To combat slipperiness, we deploy 577 gritters. Under weather conditions such as freezing rain, Rijkswaterstaat can deploy emergency machines, such as the Lavastorm and Firestorm. On the website Rijkswaterstaatstrooit you can see where the gritters are driving and where gritting has taken place. The site also shows how much salt has been spread.

Advice to road users

  • Check weather and traffic information before departure. Via the website Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Information we share the current situation on the road.
  • Go well prepared.
  • Adjust your driving style to the conditions, keep sufficient distance, and avoid unnecessary lane changes.
  • Give gritters space.
