On June 19, 2025, the Inspectorate for the Environment and Transport (ILT) upheld the objections from Nature Monuments regarding the construction of a gravel ridge near Meers. The objections from Sport Fishing were rejected.
Together with Nature Monuments, the next steps are now being considered following this ruling.
Work Suspended
Work on the gravel ridge has been suspended since the ruling of the preliminary relief judge on September 17, 2024.
Reason for Construction of Gravel Ridge
The gravel ridge helps to retain water in the Grensmaas for a longer period. This is necessary to maintain the groundwater level in Belgium. We have made agreements with Flanders regarding this. The current gravel ridge has been breached and restored several times.
Therefore, Rijkswaterstaat chose to relocate it so that it could work stably for a longer time.
