Rijkswaterstaat is organizing an open evening on May 12, 2025, to inform interested parties about the plans for restoring and constructing natural banks between Harderwijk and Bad Hoophuizen.
Nature-Friendly Banks
We are starting preparations to make the southern banks of Veluwemeer more nature-friendly. The plan is to create nature-friendly banks, gradual land-water transitions, and restore existing banks. Part of the improvement is to expand the reed planting, creating a vital belt along the southern bank of Veluwemeer. To prevent erosion of the banks due to wave action, we are also exploring whether a form of bank protection can be implemented.
These nature-friendly banks provide shelter. The shelter creates a healthy habitat for various plants and animals. Fish use it as a refuge, and for birds such as the reed warbler and the bittern, reeds are important for nesting.
Information Open Evening
The construction and restoration of existing banks will start in 2027 and is part of a broader effort to achieve the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and Natura 2000 goals. We are already involving interested parties in plans they have to improve water quality and habitat in the Veluwerand lakes. During the open evening, questions about the improvement plans can be asked to experts from Rijkswaterstaat.
