Rijkswaterstaat is organizing information evenings on January 21 and 28, 2026, to inform interested parties about plans to improve the ecological water quality along the coast between Lemmer and the Afsluitdijk.

To further improve living conditions for birds and fish, we want to take measures at five locations along the Frisian IJsselmeer coast, such as promoting the growth of water reed, creating floodable grasslands (outside the dikes), and installing underwater structures for fish. These measures will be implemented in areas already designated as nature reserves.

The Frisian IJsselmeer Coast

The Frisian IJsselmeer coast has high natural value due to relatively many areas outside the dikes with shallow water. However, unnatural water level management and decreasing water reed are causing important habitats for plants and animals to disappear. We are working within the Programmatic Approach to Large Waters (PAGW) to preserve and strengthen the natural values in this area.

Open Evening

Our experts are happy to guide interested parties through the considerations about the measures to be taken and the broader effort to improve ecology and water quality along the Frisian IJsselmeer coast. At the information evenings, they will present preliminary ideas and answer questions.
