Job swap offers valuable lessons on collaboration

Read how Govert van Oord (CEO Van Oord) and Martin Wijnen (Director-General Rijkswaterstaat) swapped roles for a day and got a look into each others work to better understand the opportunities, challenges, and complex decisions the other faces.

A successful experiment that provided valuable insights: ‘We wish everyone an annual exchange with a stakeholder. You learn a lot from that.’

Sustainable collaboration in Spooldersluis renovation

A significantly lower CO2 emission than traditional renovations: in the renovation of the Spooldersluis complex , the focus on sustainability in Rijkswaterstaats request was reflected in the design by contractor combination Le Chêne. Intensive collaboration between both parties helped to quickly implement the plans.

Go-Barry: from pioneering to practice

Roadworks must be as safe as possible. Smart solutions contribute to this. A good example is the Go-Barry . This mobile barrier was designed by the market and Rijkswaterstaat, tested in several successful pilots, and is now ready for further scaling and implementation. ‘The Go-Barry must be accessible to every market party.’

Making strategic choices together for the future

This is more relevant and important than ever, with scarcity in many areas, from the labor market to raw materials and concerns about the resilience of critical infrastructures.

Pilot ‘Circular Demolition’ shows Rijkswaterstaats ambitions

Rijkswaterstaat manages about 450 buildings. A small part of these, often old, vacant, or no longer safe to use, is replaced by new construction or removed to return land to nature.

Increasingly, the question arises: how do we ensure that as many materials as possible get a second life? Together with two demolition companies, Rijkswaterstaat conducted a pilot to investigate this.

Renovation IJsselbruggen A12: two-phase approach in full action

The renovation of the steel A12 bridges over the IJssel near Arnhem was one of the first two-phase approach projects at Rijkswaterstaat. The project was completed in October 2025. We look back with those involved from contractor Savera IJsselbruggen and client Rijkswaterstaat. Shared conclusion: investing in collaboration pays off.
