The new edition of the digital magazine Reachable Zeeland has been published. In this December 2025 edition, we show how Rijkswaterstaat is working on renewing Zeelands infrastructure.
We reflect on Rijkswaterstaats renewal task in the province and show what this means for road users, residents, and shipping.
In this edition you will read about:
- We renew Zeelands infrastructure
A new video provides an overview of the maintenance task in Zeeland: why major maintenance is needed now, which objects we manage, and how we minimize disruption. - Major renovation of Krammersluizen spectacularly started
With the lifting of the reserve lock door, the renovation of the Krammersluizen started on October 15, 2025. Over the coming years, the lock complex will be completely renewed and prepared for the future. Watch the impressive transport of the huge lock door. - Vlaketunnel closed for major maintenance
In April 2026, the Vlaketunnel will be closed for ten consecutive days for necessary maintenance on asphalt, concrete, expansion joints, gutter constructions, and guardrails. We explain why this work is needed now and how we carefully prepare the closure. - Four bridges receive urgent maintenance
The Slaak Bridge, Bathse Bridge, Kreekrak Bridge, and Vossemeerse Bridge will receive temporary maintenance next year as a bridge to a later major renovation. This keeps the bridges safe to use. - Five Zeeland locks provided with new fendering
With the completion of the works at the Zandkreek Lock, the fendering at five locks on busy shipping routes has been renewed, ensuring ships can safely enter and exit the lock chamber in the future. - Closure of Oosterschelde Barrier went smoothly
The Oosterschelde Barrier was closed for 26 nights in May and June 2025 to replace the railing. Thanks to careful preparation and coordination with all involved, the inconvenience was limited. - Renovation of Grevelingensluis, Roompotsluis, and Bergse Diepsluis awarded
Rijkswaterstaat has awarded the contract for the renovation of three Zeeland locks to the STROOOM combination. We start with the renewal of the Grevelingensluis.

In the coming years, we will work on replacing and renovating existing infrastructure in Zeeland. Many bridges, tunnels, locks, and viaducts were built in the fifties and sixties and have been intensively used by increasingly heavy traffic and under changing climate conditions.
By investing heavily in maintenance and renewal now, we keep Zeeland safe and accessible in the future. Together we work on a reachable Zeeland.
