Rijkswaterstaat has awarded the tender for circular workplace furnishing. At the beginning of 2026, collaboration started with two new suppliers for furnishing workplaces and meeting rooms at approximately 300 locations. These range from the largest office in Utrecht with approximately 55,000 m2 of office space to a lighthouse or salt warehouse.

The tender is divided into two segments. The segment for workplace and meeting furniture is awarded to Gispen Nederland BV. The segment for workplace chairs is awarded to Be by Bèta.

Both suppliers were selected because of their contribution to Rijkswaterstaats strategic goals in the field of impactful work environments, innovation, and circular services. An impactful work environment is understood as a well-designed, climate-neutral, and circular setup that supports efficient work and vitality and contributes to Rijkswaterstaats attractiveness as an employer.

Circular and future-proof

A circular workplace furnishing includes desks, cabinets, and meeting chairs. Gispen Nederland BV contributes to the design of the work environments, focusing on extending the lifespan of existing furniture.

The award also includes the supply of (customized) office chairs and 24-hour chairs (for intensive use). Be by Bèta is responsible for supplying (customized) office chairs, with attention to ergonomics and sustainable use, and for maintaining the 24-hour chairs.

Careful transition

In the coming period, the implementation of the new contract will be carefully arranged in collaboration with both suppliers. This includes, among other things, the use of the furniture management system (MMS) and the ordering and payment processes.

With this collaboration, Rijkswaterstaat further fulfills its sustainability and circular objectives to work fully circular by 2030. High-quality use and reuse of materials is an essential part of this.
