On Friday, May 16, 2025, The Tonnenloods on Terschelling will be officially opened. The building has been renovated and made more sustainable.
The shed is divided into 2 parts, where Rijkswaterstaat utilizes one part. This part serves as an office location, material storage, and workshop for activities on the island and at sea.
Renovation and Sustainability
Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, contractor Friso Bouwgroep started the renovation of The Tonnenloods in May 2024.
The roof and facade of the shed have been insulated. The shed has been further made sustainable by installing LED lighting and a heat pump. With the arrival of the heat pump, a gas connection is no longer needed.
New Purpose
The Tonnenloods consists of 2 parts, of which we utilize one part. Previously, the steel navigation markers were maintained here. With the introduction of plastic navigation markers, this is no longer necessary.
The building will now serve as an office location and material storage for the buoy service. There is also a workshop available for small tasks on the island and at sea.
We are one of the larger employers on the island, with over 35 employees. A good work and meeting location is therefore important, and with the renovation of The Tonnenloods, this is now being addressed.
The part of the building that is no longer used by us will be rented out to Stichting Tonnenloods. The intention is to create a versatile experience center here with space for nature, culture, and education.
Open Day at The Tonnenloods
On Saturday, May 17, 2025, The Tonnenloods will be open to the public from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Visitors can take a look inside the renovated building and board a patrol vessel and 2 buoy vessels.
Come and experience the work of Rijkswaterstaat. Our colleagues will be happy to welcome you at Willem Barentszkade 43 in West-Terschelling.
