Rijkswaterstaat and the regional water managers will put a temporary pump installation into operation at the Eefde pumping station starting Friday, April 18, 2025. The installation pumps water from the IJssel to the Twente Canals, ensuring that the water level in the canals remains stable.
This ensures sufficient water is available for shipping, nature, agriculture, urban areas, and drinking water supply, and prevents damage to dikes and banks.
Eefde Lock has 2 pumping stations, which are an indispensable link in the water system of Twente, the Achterhoek, the northeastern part of Overijssel, and the southern part of Drenthe. The pumping stations pump water from the Gelderse IJssel into the Twente Canals when needed.
When the water level is below 3.00 m +NAP on the IJssel, restrictions occur in the water supply from these 2 pumping stations. Therefore, depending on the weather and water level forecasts and water demand, a temporary pump installation may be placed at that time.
When the water level in the IJssel is sufficiently high again, the Eefde pumping stations will pump water from the IJssel back into the Twente Canals. The temporary pump installation will be removed when the weather and water level forecasts are favorable.
Collaboration with Water Managers
Together with the regional water managers, we have agreed in the Water Agreement Twente Canals and Overijsselse Vecht on how we all strive for the supply of sufficient freshwater.
One measure is the placement of a temporary pump installation. The water managers jointly bear the costs for this temporary installation.
