Road users should continue to expect slippery conditions due to winter precipitation and freezing of wet road sections. The KNMI has issued a yellow warning. Winter showers are passing over the country. Besides slipperiness, we warn of dangerous driving conditions.
During the afternoon, local winter showers will still pass over the country. Around midnight, snowfall amounts in the central and southern parts of the country may increase by several centimeters. Traffic may experience significant disruption Friday night and Saturday morning.
Throughout the country, freezing of wet road sections may cause very slippery roads. Due to the Christmas holiday, there is less traffic on the highways, increasing the risk of slipperiness. The road salt is less effectively pressed into the road surface.
We advise road users to closely monitor weather and traffic information.
Slipperiness and snow: be well prepared
Since New Years Day, we have been extensively combating slipperiness on the highways.
Since Thursday evening 7:00 PM, Rijkswaterstaats gritters have already driven over 78,000 km. More than 7 million kg of salt has been spread. This involves 577 gritters (which can be equipped with snow plows if necessary), 630 snow plows, and 1200 personnel.
On the website Rijkswaterstaat spreading , you can see where the gritters are driving and where salt has been spread in the past 6 hours. The site also shows how much salt has been spread.
Deployment of Lavastorm
In special circumstances, such as freezing rain and ice formation, we can deploy emergency machines like the Lavastorm. We use these machines to combat ice sheets on the road. Currently, the Lavastorm is deployed on the A2 between Den Bosch and Vught.
What can road users do themselves?
In case of slipperiness, we work around the clock to combat it. But what can road users do themselves to travel safely from A to B?
- Before departure, closely monitor weather and traffic information. Via the website Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Information , we share the current road situation.
- If you are already on the road, adjust your driving style accordingly.
- Keep sufficient distance.
- Do not change lanes unnecessarily.
- Give gritters space.
