The first day of the year is expected to end with wintry precipitation in the central and eastern parts of the country. During the evening and night, rain showers may turn into (wet) snow showers.
Rijkswaterstaat expects very slippery roads and therefore starts salting actions to combat slipperiness. Road users are advised to adjust their driving style and keep sufficient distance.
Despite the wintry conditions, Rijkswaterstaat does not expect heavy traffic. Because there is less traffic on the highways, the risk of slipperiness is greater, as the salt on the road is less well driven in. The wintry weather will continue in the coming days. Road users are advised to check the latest traffic information before departure via the website Rijkswaterstaat Traffic Information.
Intensive salting actions
Rijkswaterstaat salts day and night to keep the highways as passable as possible. Hundreds of salt spreaders have already been active this winter and have driven a total of over 300,000 km. In total, nearly 20 million kg of salt has been used to combat slipperiness.
