The renovation of the Prinses Marijkesluis is featured in the third season of the TV program The Construction Makes It. Host Daan Nieber visits special construction and infrastructure projects in the Netherlands, showcasing how technology, craftsmanship, and collaboration make a difference in complex projects.

Technical challenges

For the episode about the Prinses Marijkesluis, Nieber went out with technical manager Loek from Rijkswaterstaat. Together they look at how this important lock is being prepared for the future.

Loek talks about the technical challenges: working underwater, materials resistant to extreme conditions, and keeping the shipping route continuously open. He also shows how Rijkswaterstaat collaborates with contractors and other partners to carry out the renovation safely and efficiently.

‘The great thing about The Construction Makes It is that it shows how versatile our work is. From designing behind the computer, to diving underwater and dismantling huge lock gates: everything is covered. I liked that they didn’t just show the spectacular work, but also the office work. Because without drawings, meetings and preparations, you get nowhere. That combination makes Rijkswaterstaat special.’ - Loek, technical manager Rijkswaterstaat

A unique behind-the-scenes look

With this participation, Rijkswaterstaat shows what is involved in maintaining vital waterworks. The episode offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at a project that is important not only for shipping but also for the water safety of the hinterland.
