On Monday, November 3, 2025, Bouwend Nederland published the annual ranking of sustainable contractors. Rijkswaterstaat achieved fourth place this year, once again ranking among the top most sustainable clients in the Netherlands.

The scores in the ranking show that all frontrunners continue to improve their performance in sustainable procurement. It is a clear trend demonstrating that sustainability is becoming increasingly embedded in the working methods of major public clients.

We also see this development at Rijkswaterstaat in the way we structurally incorporate sustainability in our procurement and collaboration with the market.

Sustainable purchasing is a given

We are proud of our fourth place in the ranking of sustainable contractors, says Roger Mol, Chief Engineer-Director of Sustainability and Environment and Chief Procurement Officer at Rijkswaterstaat. In recent years, we have seen a steady upward trend in our scores, which is a nice confirmation that we are on the right track. As one of the largest clients in the civil engineering sector, we want to make sustainable purchasing a given.

This appreciation shows that we are on course and continue to improve. We congratulate the other frontrunners on this list warmly. It is great to see that sustainability is so firmly embedded with these parties and forms a fixed part of how we procure and collaborate in the Netherlands.

Sustainability and environmental effects

The ranking compares public and private clients in the construction and infrastructure sector on how they incorporate sustainability in their procurement practices. Rijkswaterstaat has scored highly for several years and with its consistently strong position shows that the organization not only has ambitions but also achieves concrete results.

Rijkswaterstaat incorporates sustainability and environmental effects in both purchasing requirements and award criteria. This stimulates innovation in the market and actively contributes to a future-proof infrastructure sector. Together we ensure that sustainability is not an extra, but a natural part of procuring and executing projects.
