Rijkswaterstaat collaborates closely with industry organizations, market parties, and other partners for a safe, livable, and accessible Netherlands. These collaborations are crucial given the significant infrastructure challenges facing the Netherlands.

Construction Netherlands has asked Rijkswaterstaat and contractor Mourik to provide an exclusive insight into the renovation task of the Princess Marijkesluis. In four episodes, viewers will gain insight into what is involved in terms of craftsmanship, innovation, technology, and above all, strong collaboration.

Renovation Task

Much of the infrastructure from the 1950s and 1960s is due for renovation or replacement. In addition to climate change, sustainability requirements, and energy transition, scarcity in the labor market also plays a significant role in the renovation task. Construction Makes It is a campaign by Construction Netherlands that shows together what construction and infrastructure do, how it is done increasingly smarter and more sustainably, and especially why it is important for our country. We also show young and old how beautiful work in our sector is.

Craftsmanship and Collaboration

The Princess Marijkesluis is part of the major renovation task of Rijkswaterstaat. The lock is located in the middle of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, one of Europes busiest shipping routes with more than 80,000 ships per year, and simultaneously protects 330,000 residents of the Betuwe from high water. Renovating in such a place requires craftsmanship, innovation, and above all, strong collaboration.

Last weekend, the renovation of the Princess Marijkesluis was first shown in the TV series Construction Makes It on RTL 4. Together with contractor Mourik, Rijkswaterstaat takes viewers along in what is involved. In the first episode, it became clear how extensive the renovation of a lock is.

Such work does not go without hindrance, but together with Mourik, ways have been sought to minimize the impact on shipping and the environment as much as possible. Last Saturday, episode two aired on television, focusing on technology. In the upcoming episodes of Construction Makes It, we will give even more beautiful insights into how we tackle this together.
