At the Werpsterhoek interchange, where the A32 (Meppel - Leeuwarden) and the A31 (Harlingen - Drachten) meet, cracks in the road surface and deformations in viaducts over both the road and the railway have been detected. The interchange is part of the Haak om Leeuwarden Zuid project, completed in 2014.

Investigation

Research shows that the problems have multiple causes. One of them is the use of steel slags during construction. At various locations, substances from these steel slags have been released after coming into contact with soil and rainwater. This may have adverse environmental effects.

Measures for safety and environment

To ensure the safety and availability of the Werpsterhoek interchange and to limit the impact on the environment, measures have been taken. Possible environmental consequences are also taken into account.

The following measures are currently being implemented:

  • intensive monitoring of roads, railway and viaducts
  • draining and purifying water that has been in contact with steel slags
  • placement of fences on and around the interchange

Definitive solution in preparation

In addition to the ongoing measures, a structural solution is being developed. Several scenarios are currently being investigated. Once more clarity is available, we will communicate about it. Our approach is closely coordinated with the municipality of Leeuwarden, Wetterskip Fryslân, Province of Fryslân and ProRail.
